Search Firms

During a volatile job market, it is important for you to consider all viable options for landing employment. While working with search firms doesn’t guarantee you will receive a full-time job offer, it can be great opportunity for you to get your resume in front of the right people.

Before you start to work with a search firm, there are a few things that you should be aware of:

  • Most search firms collect fees from the employers that they work with, not job seekers.  Don’t pay to work with one of these companies.
  • Only pick one or two search firms to work with.  If you are presented to the same company by multiple search firms, it can actually hurt your ability to get hired.
  • Search firms usually specialize in a few different career areas.  Try to pick firms whose specializations are aligned with your concentration and interests.
  • Choose a firm with a long-term relationship in mind. If they have a good reputation with the companies that they work with, you might want to work with them on future searches.
  • Remember that search firms don’t work for you; they work for the companies that hire them.  It will be up to you to build the relationship with them.
